Hyeri and Hwang In Youp have shared some fun behind-the-scenes stories about building their romantic chemistry for their new drama series, Dream to You.
Appearing as guests on the YouTube show Halmyungsoo to promote their ENA Monday-Tuesday drama, the lead actors opened up about life on set and what went on behind the camera.
The two also talked about filming their kissing scenes, revealing their completely opposite preparation styles.
Hwang In Youp shared, “If we have a night shoot, I skip dinner. I worry about my breath since we have to be so close to each other.”
Hyeri admitted she does the exact opposite. “I eat,” she said with a laugh. “If I’m hungry, I can’t film well. I need energy to act.” Smiling at Hwang, she jokingly added, “I’m really grateful for your consideration.”
The pair also revealed that the drama features plenty of kissing scenes.
“The drama should be called Kissing You instead of Dream to You,” Hwang joked. “There are happy kisses, but there are also kisses that happen as the characters heal from their emotional wounds. Each one has a different meaning, so we worked hard to portray them well.”
Building that natural on-screen chemistry took some effort, especially because of Hyeri’s packed schedule.
“We needed to get closer as actors early in the filming process, so I kept trying to make plans with Hyeri,” Hwang recalled. “When I asked what she was doing the next day, she’d say she was going to China. When I asked about another day, she’d say she had a commercial shoot. Her schedule was so packed that she barely slept.”
He added that when he later checked in on her, saying, “That must be tough,” she jokingly replied, “That’s just how it is for stars,” drawing laughs from everyone on set.
Hyeri admitted she didn’t realize what he was trying to do at first. “I didn’t know that was his intention,” she said. “It wasn’t until later that I realized he was asking me to hang out outside of filming.”
She added that the two eventually grew close while traveling together for out-of-town shoots and sharing meals with the rest of the cast.
Toward the end of the episode, the pair took on a fun relationship debate involving Karrot Market, Korea’s popular online secondhand marketplace. They were asked which would be worse: receiving a gift bought secondhand or finding out your partner sold a gift you had given them.
Hyeri chose the first option. “A gift is supposed to be meaningful, so I wouldn’t want one bought from Karrot Market,” she said. “If I wanted to sell a gift, I’d tell the person first.”
Hwang disagreed. “I’d be sadder if someone sold a gift I gave them,” he replied, drawing plenty of reactions from everyone in the studio.
