Yoo Hae Jin has scored another holiday hit. After drawing 16.93 million admissions with The King’s Warden over the Lunar New Year period, the actor returned to the top of the box office with The Assassin(s) over Chuseok.
According to the Korean Film Council, The Assassin(s), directed by Hur Jin Ho, drew 1,119,156 admissions from September 25th through 27th to top the weekend box office. Its cumulative total stands at 1,566,222 admissions.
Starring Yoo Hae Jin, Park Hae Il and Lee Min Ho, the film opened on September 23rd and surpassed 1 million admissions in just four days.
The Assassin(s) follows the investigation into the August 15th, 1974 assassination attempt that resulted in the death of South Korea’s first lady. Detective Cheol Gu (Yoo), newspaper editor Jae Hwan (Park) and rookie reporter Young Il (Lee) pursue the truth amid conflicting testimony and a questionable investigation.
Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub debuted at No. 2 with 566,526 weekend admissions and 833,030 overall. The R-rated crime drama opened the same day as The Assassin(s) and drew roughly half its rival’s weekend audience despite facing greater restrictions in attracting family moviegoers.
The final installment in the Tazza franchise stars Byun Yo Han as Jang Tae Young, a successful online casino entrepreneur who seeks revenge after his longtime friend Park Tae Young (Roh Jae Won) takes everything from him. Their rivalry unfolds across the international poker circuit, mixing friendship, betrayal and jealousy.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey placed third with 364,763 admissions over the three-day period.
The Intern, starring Choi Min Sik and Han So Hee, slipped from No. 1 the previous weekend to fourth with 206,347 admissions, bringing its total to 756,057.
Lee Chang Dong’s Possible Love, starring Jeon Do Yeon, Sul Kyung Gu, Zo In Sung and Cho Yeo Jeong, rounded out the top five with 72,022 weekend admissions and 115,938 overall. The 164-minute R-rated film is playing in select theaters for two weeks ahead of its November 6th release on Netflix.
