Lee Seung Gi’s father-in-law has been sentenced to prison for stock manipulation.
The Seoul Southern District Court sentenced Lee Seung Gi’s father-in-law and 13 others who were indicted on charges including violations of the Capital Markets Act on September 29th.
Lee Seung Gi’s father-in-law was sentenced to three years and six months in prison, fined 400 million won ($295,000), and ordered to forfeit more than 125.5 million won ($92,000). He had been tried while out on bail but was taken into custody immediately following the sentencing.
Lee Seung Gi’s father-in-law and his associates were accused of manipulating the stock prices of KOSDAQ-listed companies for illegal profits. Prosecutors alleged that they artificially drove up stock prices by making false announcements about plans for promising new businesses, ultimately earning tens of billions of won in illicit profits.
The court said, “The market manipulation crimes in which the defendants participated severely disrupted the healthy formation of stock prices, making their culpability very serious.” The court added that such crimes “harm numerous innocent investors and undermine confidence in the market.”
However, the court acquitted the defendants of some charges related to stock manipulation and violations of the Attorneys-at-Law Act, citing insufficient evidence.
Lee Seung Gi married Lee Da In, the daughter of Kyun Mi Ri, in 2023. The couple has since welcomed a son and a daughter.
In 2025, a day after his father-in-law was arrested, Lee Seung Gi released a statement saying that the “trust between family members has been damaged to a level that is difficult to repair.” He also announced that he and his wife had decided to cut ties with her family after much consideration.
