Woo Do Hwan has opened up about the controversial ending of Disney Plus original series Made in Korea Season 2.
The actor spoke about the drama in an interview following the finale, reflecting on the attachment he developed to the series after spending two seasons with the character.
“I became even more attached to it because we went all the way through Season 2,” he said. “Compared to other projects, it’s harder to completely let go of a series with multiple seasons. It still feels like it’s really alive somewhere.”
Addressing the finale, Woo said he felt both pressure and responsibility because his character Baek Ki Hyun’s decision was central to the season.
“Jang Gun Young (played by Jung Woo Sung) kept asking him whose side he was going to take,” Woo said. “The director also kept saying Ki Hyun was the most pitiful character … Everything around him was closing in, so I felt like his choice really mattered. I couldn’t approach the character lightly.”
He added that the director wanted Ki Hyun’s intentions to remain difficult to read until the very end. “He didn’t want too much wavering to show, and he didn’t want viewers to know which side Ki Hyun would choose.”
Woo also addressed speculation over whether Ki Hyun was responsible for what happened to his older brother, Baek Ki Tae (played by Hyun Bin).
“If I have to speak from Ki Hyun’s point of view, Hwang Dae Sik was threatening his family, so I think Ki Hyun felt he had no choice but to stop his brother,” he said. “The final scene was also our last day of filming, and I remember telling Hyun Bin, ‘I don’t think Ki Hyun killed him.'”
He emphasized, “I never pulled the trigger. The director also told me, ‘You didn’t shoot a scene where you pulled the trigger.’ So I don’t think I can give you a particularly juicy headline about the ending.”
Asked what he would have done in Ki Hyun’s position, Woo answered, “I probably would’ve cried and begged my brother to stop. I would’ve said, ‘Can’t you see what happened to our sister?’ I might’ve even said, ‘I’ll kill myself.’ Ki Hyun was trying to tell him to stop in a different way.”
Woo added, “I’m completely on Ki Hyun’s side. I can’t help it. I actually wonder what people found hard to understand. I don’t know why it’s even a question.”
Made in Korea Season 2 is a noir drama following Baek Ki Tae’s increasingly dangerous pursuit of greater power nine years later. The series concluded on September 23rd with Episodes 5 and 6.
Woo returned in Season 2 as Baek Ki Hyun, now a lieutenant colonel in the Defense Security Command, portraying a man torn between his family and his own convictions.
