K-pop singer Soyou is speaking out again following claims she was intoxicated on a flight back to Seoul, saying she only had “a small drink” and was instead subjected to repeated humiliation by airline staff.
On October 20, the singer took to Instagram with a detailed follow-up statement, describing what she called a “deeply uncomfortable” experience while returning home after her New York schedule.
“I only had a small amount of alcohol served with my meal at the lounge before boarding,” she wrote. “There were no issues getting on the plane, and no one stopped me or questioned my condition.”
Soyou explained that after boarding, she asked a flight attendant about mealtime but had trouble communicating in English. When she requested a Korean-speaking crew member, her words were apparently misinterpreted—prompting the purser and a security officer to approach her.
“Once a Korean-speaking flight attendant came to help, it was confirmed there was no problem, and I continued the flight as planned,” she said.
Still, Soyou claims the tension didn’t stop there. “The way I was treated afterward made me feel humiliated,” she recalled. “When I stepped aside to let a meal cart through, the purser barked, ‘Move now!’ in a harsh tone. Another flight attendant even sided with me, but there was no apology.
She added that her staff asked for a Korean-language menu but were handed one in a foreign language with no explanation. “This wasn’t about money or attention,” Soyou wrote. “I just didn’t want anyone else to go through something like this again.”
Soyou’s clarification comes a day after she posted on Instagram that she believed she was treated unfairly for asking for a Korean-speaking attendant—raising the possibility of racial discrimination. The post sparked online debate when another passenger claiming to have been on the same flight alleged that Soyou appeared “heavily intoxicated.”
