Super Junior’s Choi Siwon is pushing back on the “political controversy” label surrounding his social media posts.
On July 14, Choi personally responded to a user who questioned why his remarks are often framed as controversial.
“Why does it get labeled a controversy when Choi Siwon says it? I genuinely don’t understand. Someone explain,” the user wrote.
The post compared a headline describing Choi as embroiled in a “political controversy” with coverage of Song Hye Kyo expressing her “political convictions” and other celebrities being praised for “speaking their minds.”
Choi replied, “I believe I was simply speaking about basic principles. I don’t agree with turning comments about universal values like the people’s sovereignty and equality before the law into a ‘political controversy.'”
He also liked another post referencing past reports that he had “no interest in politics” before later writing about “concerns for the future of our country.”
Choi has repeatedly found himself at the center of debate over social media posts interpreted as political. In February, he briefly posted two meaningful four-character idioms on the day of Yoon Suk Yeol’s first court ruling before deleting them, sparking speculation over whether they carried a political message.
The debate later escalated into personal attacks and insulting posts online, prompting Choi’s side to take legal action against malicious commenters.
“Silence ends here,” Choi wrote on social media July 7. “I will no longer stand by and watch malicious attacks continue.”
