The first stills of Jo Jung Suk‘s return to television dramas after three years have been released for tvN’s new weekend drama, Captivating the King.
Set to premiere on January 21st, 2024, Captivating the King is the story about King Yi In, who holds a prestigious position but harbors a lowly heart, and a woman who becomes a spy to bring him down. This fictional historical drama, based on imagination, focuses on the unique topic of “Saejak (spies),” who secretly gather and provide information while working undercover. It features The Good Detective director Cho Nam Kook and The Crowned Clown writer Kim Seon Deok. Additionally, Jo Jung Suk (as Yi In) and Shin Se Kyung (as Kang Hee Su and Kang Mong Woo) team up as the king and the spy, respectively, to unfold a tale of cruel fate.
Jo Jung Suk plays the role of Yi In, a natural-born carefree nobleman. Yi In lives a life of leisure as he struggles with the pain of his sincere loyalty to his brother Yi Sun (Choi Dae Hoon) being misconstrued as treachery. His life takes a turn when he befriends Kang Mong Woo, a bet-weaving Go player, and finds himself in the midst of a cruel fate.
In the released stills, Jo Jung Suk captivates as Prince Jinhan, the king’s brother. His portrayal of a carefree nobleman, lying on a sun-drenched riverside rock, seemingly free of worldly worries, brings a smile to the viewers. Meanwhile, in another still, he reveals the inner complexities of Jinhan, a character that embodies both strength and pathos, in the pouring rain.
The production team praised the actor, saying, “With his solid acting skills honed across various genres, Jo Jung Suk has continuously created impactful characters in every work. Viewers will be captivated by his matured performance and charm in his long-awaited return to the small screen after three years.”
