Koo Kyo Hwan is opening up about the work he put into Colony, his friendship with Jun Ji Hyun and the much-talked-about scenes from his ongoing drama.
In the zombie action film Colony, Koo plays Seo Young Chul, a biology professor who creates a mysterious zombie virus and triggers an outbreak. Comparing the role to his previous Yeon Sang Ho project Peninsula, Koo explained, “If Captain Seo was a villain who lost his mind because he was dependent on others and consumed by anxiety, fear and weakness, Seo Young Chul is someone who’s gone mad because he’s so convinced he’s right.”
He added that director Yeon seemed to have handled the character smartly. “After watching Colony, people keep saying they want to punch Young Chul. How the audience reacts solely belongs to them, and I’m enjoying it,” Koo said.
Some viewers have even compared the response to the anger Kim Eui Sung drew with his infamous character in Train to Busan. Koo said he understood the comparison, adding, “Even to me, his performance was astonishing and worthy of respect. I think being able to provoke that level of anger from the audience is truly incredible. I wonder if I could ever stand opposite someone like him.”

Koo also spoke about working with Jun Ji Hyun for the first time. “Jun Ji Hyun and I both love humor. We were throwing jokes back and forth like we were competing,” he said. “She has real quick wit and creativity. She knows how to turn an improvised moment into something fun. Though I think I’m a little funnier. If you compare the three of us, including director Yeon Sang Ho, I’d say I’m first, then Jun Ji Hyun.”
Jun previously called Koo her “little sister” in an interview for Colony, and Koo returned the affection in his own way. “To me, she’s like a best friend and the cheer captain of our class,” he said. “She gives me great energy. I think the reason the villain worked so well in ‘Colony’ was because of that close relationship between us.”
He said the Jun Ji Hyun he met in person was exactly the person he had imagined for the past 20 years. Koo also shared that he would love to cast her in one of his own projects someday. “I do have a script,” he said. “Of course, I don’t plan to show it to her until it’s fully ready, but if possible, I’d love to cast her.”
Koo also reflected on his recently wrapped drama We Are All Trying Here, including the cardigan-hug scene that sparked mixed reactions among viewers. “Honestly, quite a lot of scenes became hot topics,” he said. “None of the interpretations of Hwang Dong Man (his character) belong to me. I act with the hope of giving something to the audience, so whatever each viewer feels is valid.”
