Netflix has reportedly canceled its highly anticipated American Squid Game spin-off, tentatively titled Heckler, according to multiple sources cited by The Playlist.
The project, which was being developed by acclaimed director David Fincher, had been in the works for several years but will no longer move forward.
The spin-off was originally planned as an English-language, U.S.-based adaptation of the global hit series. British writer Dennis Kelly, best known for the acclaimed series Utopia, was reportedly attached to write the project alongside Fincher. The collaboration would have reunited the two after Fincher previously explored a potential remake of Utopia for HBO.
Sources say Netflix initially had strong interest in expanding Squid Game with an English-language series. However, changes in leadership and shifting content priorities reportedly caused the project to lose momentum. Fincher’s focus on his upcoming film The Adventures of Cliff Booth, starring Brad Pitt, also reportedly played a role in the project being put on hold.
Instead of pursuing a single American spin-off, Netflix appears to be exploring localized versions of Squid Game in different countries. Potential projects in France and Norway have reportedly been discussed, although no official production plans have been confirmed.
The report also clarified that Cate Blanchett was never officially attached to Heckler. Despite earlier speculation, the project was not centered around her character or the American recruiter from the original series.
Rumors about Fincher developing an English-language Squid Game series first surfaced in 2024, with some reports suggesting production could begin as early as 2026. However, Netflix never officially announced the project’s title, cast or production schedule.
Meanwhile, the original Squid Game, created by Hwang Dong Hyuk, concluded with its third season in 2025. Netflix continues to expand the franchise through projects such as the reality competition series Squid Game: The Challenge.
Fincher is currently in post-production on The Adventures of Cliff Booth.
