Squid Game Season 3 follows Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) as he returns to the deadly game and suffers the loss of his closest friend. The season also reveals the true identity of the mysterious Front Man (Lee Byung Hun) and explores the final fate of the surviving players.
Before Season 2 aired, rumors circulated that director David Fincher would produce an American adaptation of Squid Game. Netflix, however, firmly denied these claims. Still, the surprise appearance of Cate Blanchett as the “Ttakji Woman” in the final scene of Season 3 has reignited global fan interest in a potential U.S. remake or spin-off.
Director Hwang dismissed the rumors, saying, “I haven’t heard anything official. I don’t even know what’s real.” He also mentioned online speculation about filming beginning in December and his alleged involvement in the production.
Given the global success of Squid Game, Hwang has likely received numerous offers from Hollywood. He shared, “It was very difficult. I felt that recovering physically should be my priority, so I haven’t been reviewing or considering Hollywood offers,” adding that he’s been focused on returning to his daily routine.
That said, he added, “If I were to receive a request about an American version, I would seriously consider it.”
Hwang and Lee Byung Hun have previously hinted at the possibility of spin-offs in interviews with U.S. media. As for a rough concept, Hwang explained, “There’s a photo of the Ttakji Man (played by Gong Yoo) and the Front Man at Captain Park’s (played by Oh Dal-su) house. I think it could be fun to explore their relationship for the fans without the pressure of sending a deeper message.”
Still, he made it clear that nothing is set in stone: “It’s too vague to say when it might happen. If the opportunity arises, maybe I could give it a try.”
Squid Game Season 3 is now available on Netflix.
