Ha Young is opening up about her family’s remarkable medical legacy and why she chose acting instead.
The actress appeared alongside Jung Hae In in a video released by Netflix Korea on August 6th, where the Our Sticky Love co-stars discussed the drama and their recent projects.
During the conversation, Ha Young reflected on filming the Netflix series The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call, calling it one of the most enjoyable experiences of her career.
“It was the first project where I felt that free while acting,” she said. “The director told me to relax and show myself as I really am. That gave me confidence and allowed me to perform much more freely.”
Ha Young also confirmed that she comes from a family with four generations of doctors.
When Yoo Byung Jae asked about her family’s medical background, she explained that her father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all doctors. She added that, according to what she had been told, her great-grandfather was among the first people to open a clinic specializing in Western medicine in Hanyang.
Her older sister is also an internal medicine specialist.
Despite growing up surrounded by medicine, Ha Young said she never wanted to become a doctor herself.
“I never once wanted to be a doctor,” she said with a laugh. “It seemed like such a difficult job that I didn’t even dare consider it. I just hoped my sister would work hard at it.”
Her family’s expertise did, however, come in handy while she was filming The Trauma Code, in which she played nurse Cheon Jang Mi.
“I had to understand the names of medications and medical terminology to act properly, so I asked my family a lot of questions,” she said. “For the operating room scenes, I also asked things like where a nurse should be standing.”
Ha Young has continued to build her profile through projects including The Trauma Code and the upcoming second season of Bloodhounds. She next stars in Our Sticky Love as Go Eun Sae, a prosecutor with amnesia. The series premieres on August 7th.
