Elle Korea has unveiled its October issue pictorial and interview with Seo Kang Jun.
Shot under the concept “OFF DUTY,” the pictorial captures a more sensual and tense side of the actor, focusing on the contrast between his boyish and mature image.
Seo is currently starring as the warm and gentle Namgoong Ho in A Love Other Than Yours. Looking back on filming the drama, he said, “I spent a lot of myself trying to fully understand Namgoong and Mi Do’s emotions and state of mind, and then express what came from that. I’m experiencing a kind of exhaustion that comes after pouring everything inside you out.”
Of Namgoong Ho, he added, “I wanted him to be someone who seems incredibly proper, sincere and good at respecting boundaries, but is actually anxious because he’s living an unstable life.”
Seo also shared his views on love and relationships.
“I believe you have to stand firmly on your own for you to truly love someone,” he said. “Sacrificing yourself for someone is one form of love, but the condition is that you have to maintain your own life. Your partner shouldn’t become the reason for your life.”
Rather than setting one clear goal for his life, Seo said he focuses on creating and accomplishing what he can in the present. Asked about the emptiness that can follow small moments of happiness, he said, “Emptiness is actually a valuable opportunity to come face to face with your true self.”
He continued, “A meaningful life isn’t made up only of positive emotions. Solitude, emptiness and loneliness are part of it too.” Citing Hermann Hesse’s novel “Siddhartha,” Seo spoke about how looking inward and examining himself also connects to his life as an actor.
As for what he hopes to explore next in his acting, Seo said, “I want to peel away another layer of my limitations in expression.”
“At the same time, I want to have the courage to express less,” he added. “I want to bring emotions further inward so they can come across without having to show everything, and try to create performances that don’t feel superficial.”
