Ahn Eun Jin says viewers may be surprised that her character in A Love Other Than Yours develops feelings for another man despite being in a 10-year relationship with Seo Kang Joon’s character — but she believes the drama will make it understandable.
The actress spoke at a press conference for the upcoming KBS weekend drama on September 7th in Seoul, alongside Seo Kang Joon, Lee Joo Ahn, Jo A Ram and director Hwang Seung Gi.
Premiering on September 12th, A Love Other Than Yours follows a longtime couple whose familiar 10-year relationship is shaken when they begin confronting unexpected feelings.
Ahn plays Lee Mi Do, an aspiring filmmaker who made a promising debut as a new director but has yet to break into commercial filmmaking. Despite repeated setbacks, she continues chasing her dream while navigating a relationship with Nam Goong Ho, played by Seo Kang Joon, whom she has known since childhood.
“She’s someone who keeps moving toward her dream even though she continues to face disappointment,” Ahn said. “She and Goong Ho have been together for 10 years and grew up together. At a point where neither her work nor her relationship feels exciting anymore, she begins making different choices and shaping her own life.”
Ahn said she was drawn to Mi Do because she felt like someone viewers could realistically encounter in everyday life.
“I thought she was a very relatable character,” she said. “If you follow not only her lines but also where her emotions are coming from, a lot of people will be able to understand her.”
The setup has already sparked reactions from viewers, with some questioning how Mi Do could possibly be attracted to another man while dating someone played by Seo Kang Joon.
“My friends said the same thing.” Ahn said with a laugh. “At first, even I thought, ‘Could that really happen?'”
She added, however, that an early scene may change viewers’ minds.
“There’s a line Goong Ho says to Mi Do in the first episode, and I think once you see that scene, you’ll understand it to some extent,” she said. “If you watch the drama and the performances, I think you’ll understand why Mi Do could be drawn to another man — even if it’s Seo Kang Joon.”
A Love Other Than Yours premieres September 12th at 9:20 PM KST on KBS.
