Veteran South Korean actor Choi Bulam has died at the age of 87.
According to broadcasting industry sources on October 30th, Choi passed away at around 10 PM on October 29 while receiving treatment at a hospital in Gangseo District of Seoul.
Born in Incheon in 1939, Choi began his acting career in 1959 with a stage production of Hamlet. He made his television debut in 1967 and went on to become one of the most recognizable figures in Korean entertainment, spanning television, film and theater over a career that lasted 67 years.
Two of his most iconic roles came in MBC dramas Chief Inspector (literal translation) and Country Diary. In Chief Inspector, Choi played Chief Park Young Han, a principled detective known for his strong sense of justice and compassion. The role earned him the enduring nickname “The Eternal Chief Inspector.”
He also became a household name through Country Diary, which aired from 1980 to 2002. Playing Kim Hoe Jang, the head of a family in the fictional rural village of Yangchon, Choi starred alongside actress Kim Hye Ja. His portrayal of a caring and steadfast father figure helped establish him as the embodiment of the traditional Korean father.
Choi further showcased his acting range in numerous productions, including Years of Upheaval, You and I, Age of Heroes and Gourmet. Beyond acting, he also entered politics, serving as a member of the 14th National Assembly in 1992.
In 2011, Choi began hosting KBS 1TV’s Korean Cuisine and Dining, a program exploring regional Korean cuisine and the stories of ordinary people behind the country’s food culture. He remained at the helm for 14 years before stepping down in March 2025 following back surgery for a herniated disc. His condition reportedly made it difficult for him to move around, and he subsequently focused on rehabilitation as his health continued to deteriorate.
In June 2026, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hwi Young drew public attention after sharing a photo and an update from his visit to the actor in the hospital. Despite being hospitalized, Choi Bulam reportedly greeted his visitors with his trademark hearty smile. The two also spoke about sharing a glass of makgeolli once he was discharged. The hopeful update made news of his passing all the more heartbreaking.
Outside his entertainment career, Choi was also dedicated to charitable work supporting children and teenagers.
Remembered for his warm smile, heartfelt performances, and remarkable contribution to Korean entertainment, Choi Bulam leaves behind a legacy that touched generations of viewers. His iconic characters and decades of work will continue to hold a special place in the hearts of the Korean public.
