Ji Chang Wook has opened up about the harsh reviews surrounding Netflix series The Scandal.
In an interview on September 22nd, the actor admitted, “It’s very disappointing. There’s no way it couldn’t be. It’s sad and upsetting to see a project I’m in receive negative reviews.”
“I can’t exactly enjoy the criticism,” he continued. “But I expected such reactions. I knew this wasn’t the kind of project that would receive nothing but praise. Even so, I thought it was worth doing – something worth attempting at least once in my life.”
The Scandal has drawn sharply divided reactions since its release. While its use of traditional Korean aesthetics, including hanbok, folk paintings and pansori, drew praise, some critics said the series fell flat as a tale of sexual intrigue, stripped of both pace and sensuality.
Ji said he remains satisfied with his decision to take on the project.
“I really liked it. Even if all I heard were negative reviews, I still wouldn’t say it was the wrong choice,” he said. “The rankings aren’t something I can control. Maybe they’ll improve, or maybe the show will eventually be forgotten, but personally, I’m not ashamed of it.”
He added, “As an actor, I don’t think you can only work on projects that receive good reviews. Some projects are inevitably not going to work out. The role itself was appealing, and it wasn’t an easy role to choose. Getting to try and challenge myself with a character like this at this point in my life and at my age feels meaningful, and I’m grateful for that.”
Released on September 18th, The Scandal is the latest series from Eungyo director Jung Ji Woo. It stars Son Ye Jin as Lady Cho, a gifted woman who proposes a dangerous game of seduction, Ji Chang Wook as Cho Won, Joseon’s most notorious playboy, and Nana as Hui Yeon, a young widow whose life is upended after becoming caught in their wager.
