Son Ye Jin has revealed that her younger appearance in Netflix’s The Scandal was created with CGI using images of the actress from her 20s, including her look in the 2003 film The Classic.
Son appeared alongside Ji Chang Wook and Nana on a September 21st episode of Netflix Korea’s YouTube content, where they shared behind-the-scenes stories from the series.
During the episode, the production team revealed that the teenage versions of Son Ye Jin’s Jo Yoon and Ji Chang Wook’s Jo Won were created digitally.
“Our younger faces were all made with CGI,” Son explained.
Host Yoo Byung Jae was surprised by how natural the effect looked, asking whether Son and Ji had filmed the scenes themselves before being digitally altered. Nana also said she had not realized CGI was used.
Ji Chang Wook explained, “There are scenes from when they’re teenagers, and they de-aged us to create younger versions of ourselves.”
Son Ye Jin added that the production used her actual appearance from earlier in her career as a reference.
“They tried to make it closely resemble how I looked in projects from my 20s, including when I filmed ‘The Classic,'” she said.
Because the effect was based on her real younger appearance, Son said even she was struck by the result. “When I watched it, I really felt like I was looking at myself in my 20s. It was fascinating.”
The Scandal is a series adaptation of the French classic Dangerous Liaisons, which was previously adapted in Korea as the 2003 film Untold Scandal.
