Son Ye Jin says The Scandal came to her at the right time in her career.
The actress spoke at a press conference for the Netflix series on September 9th alongside director Jung Ji Woo and co-stars Ji Chang Wook and Nana.
Son said she had long wanted to work with Jung and was intrigued when she heard he was remaking the 2003 film Untold Scandal.
“When he offered me the role of Lady Cho, I remembered watching the original film and wondered, ‘How are they going to expand this story into a series?'” she said.
After reading the scripts, Son said she was drawn to Lady Cho’s complexity and felt ready to take on the character’s desires.
“I thought I’ve now reached an age where I can express those kinds of emotions,” she said.
She added that the show’s exploration of human desire against the backdrop of a society where such desires were heavily suppressed was another major draw.
“It’s a story about human desire, but it’s set in the Joseon era, when expressing that desire was taboo,” Son said. “It was also my first period drama in a very long time. I think all of those things contributed to my decision.”
The Scandal follows Lady Cho, a gifted woman constrained by the expectations placed on women in Joseon, and Jo Won (Ji Chang Wook), a notorious womanizer who becomes involved with her in a dangerous love wager. Nana stars as Hee Yeon, a woman drawn into their game.
The series premieres on Netflix on September 18th at 5 PM KST.
