Park Bo Young had a surprising reaction to seeing her close friend Lee Kwang Soo in Gold Land.
Disney+ original series Gold Land is a survival thriller about Kim Hee Joo, who gets her hands on 150 billion won (about $100 million) worth of gold bars from a smuggling ring and must fight to survive in a world of greed and betrayal. Park plays Kim Hee Joo, a woman who grabs onto the gold as a way out of her reality, while Lee Kwang Soo makes a strong impression as Director Park, an executive in the organization hunting down the missing gold.
“I’ve known Kwang Soo for such a long time, but he didn’t feel like the person I knew,” Park said. “He was so scary in the show. I especially can’t forget how chilling his face looked when he was hanging onto the car.”
Unlike the friendly and funny image he has shown on variety shows, Lee brings a sharp, cold energy to Gold Land. Park laughed as she said she found herself completely separating the real Lee Kwang Soo from Director Park. In fact, that intensity helped her feel more comfortable in the scenes.
Their big height difference also became an interesting part of the show. “Since I’m already close with Kwang Soo, I’m used to looking up at him,” Park said. “If it had been someone I was meeting for the first time, his height alone would’ve made him feel more intimidating.” She added, “But because I’ve known him for so long, I thought, ‘I can stand up to him,’” recalling how she got into the moment.

What Park talked about most, however, was the atmosphere on set created by director Kim Sung Hoon. She praised his open communication style, saying, “He really doesn’t force any kind of hierarchy.”
For this project, Kim wanted Park to show Hee Joo’s raw, increasingly broken-down emotions rather than a polished appearance. “He wanted Hee Joo’s true face to come through,” Park explained. “He talked me through a lot of details, like how her eyes should change as she becomes more worn down.”
Because it was her first real attempt at the genre, the project came with plenty of challenges. Park described the experience as “blood, sweat and tears.”
“When I do rom-coms, I’m always thinking I need to look pretty. But this time, I was sweating through everything, and there was a strange thrill in that,” she said. Park then shared that she would like to try another similar project in the future. Still, she added with a laugh, “But before that, I want to do something pretty first.”
Gold Land, which premiered on April 29th, wrapped its 10-episode run. Park plans to take some time off before deciding on her next project.
