Prosecutors are seeking a 10 million won fine (approximately $7,000) for a woman accused of stalking actor Hwang Jung Min.
At an August 11th hearing at the Goyang Branch of Uijeongbu District Court, the woman, identified only as “A,” denied that her contact with Hwang amounted to stalking.
A claimed Hwang had personally given her his new phone number and continued to call her and share his schedule even after asking her to stop contacting him. She also said the two had discussed personal concerns and alleged that, at Hwang’s request, she posted sexually explicit writing on a private blog.
She said she continued reaching out because she wanted answers about a failed soju business venture and whether her creative work had been leaked. A also said she contacted Hwang’s son only after failing to receive responses through official channels, including his agency, and denied intending to frighten him.
Prosecutors, however, argued that Hwang had clearly told her to stop contacting him, citing messages including, “Please don’t text me,” and, “Stop texting me. Please, I’m asking you.”
They said A continued contacting Hwang and his son even after court orders barred her from approaching or communicating with him, making a total of 518 contacts. Prosecutors also said she sent hundreds of messages suggesting she might take her own life and even sent a file containing a will.
In her final statement, A acknowledged that some of her actions were inappropriate but rejected the claim that she had spent two years relentlessly stalking Hwang.
“I know there were things I did that I shouldn’t have done,” she said. “But saying that I was a stalker who one-sidedly chased after someone for two years is an entirely different story.”
She added, “I ask that you judge me based on what the records actually show.”
The verdict is scheduled to be delivered on September 8th at 10 AM KST.
