Netflix series The Scandal climbed to No. 3 on the platform’s Global Top 10 for non-English-language shows in its second week of release, as Netflix unveiled a new batch of behind-the-scenes stills.
The series recorded 2.8 million views and 21.9 million hours viewed during the week, up from 1.9 million views in its opening three days. It also entered the Top 10 in 18 countries, including South Korea, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, El Salvador, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, the Philippines and Qatar.
The Scandal follows Lady Cho, a gifted woman constrained by life in the Joseon era, and Cho Won, Joseon’s most notorious playboy, as they embark on a dangerous romantic wager that draws in Hui Yeon.
The newly released behind-the-scenes photos show Son Ye Jin, Ji Chang Wook and Nana reviewing their performances with director Jung Ji Woo and the crew, while other shots capture the relaxed atmosphere between takes. The stills also highlight the series’ colorful hanbok and elaborate production design.
The drama has continued to draw praise for its visual style and performances. MK Sports wrote, “The beautiful hanok sets and use of space are excellent. The simple yet vivid colors feel like stepping into paintings by Kim Hong Do and Shin Saimdang, while the flowing textures of the hanbok are more than enough to captivate global viewers.”
iMBC Entertainment similarly praised the show’s “excellent sets, beautiful hanbok and striking visual elements.”
Viewers have also highlighted the production. One Watcha user wrote, “The cinematography is excellent, and the period-drama elements, including the use of pansori, are handled really well,” while another said, “The stylish visuals, clean direction and lines that leave a poetic aftertaste all elevate the series.”
An IMDb user praised its “distinctive characters, great dialogue and compelling scenes of psychological warfare,” while another wrote, “Every change in emotion comes through in the characters’ expressions, gestures and actions. I also loved the use of pansori. It felt fresh and kept me smiling throughout.”
The Scandal is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.
