Flex X Cop is returning for Season 2 with Ahn Bo Hyun back as Jin Yi Soo and Jung Eun Chae joining as his new partner, Joo Hye Ra.
In an interview with W Korea, Jung said the new character is the season’s biggest change. She was drawn to the drama’s fast, comic book-like energy, though adjusting to its heightened tone took time.
“At first, I kept trying to interpret every situation rationally and approach it seriously,” she said. “But I gradually learned to relax more while filming.”
Jung also praised Ahn’s seamless return to character.
“At first, he seemed a little shy about becoming Jin Yi Soo again,” she said with a laugh. “But as soon as filming started, he became him immediately. It was like flipping a switch.”
She was especially impressed by his action skills, including performing car chases without a stunt double: “He has a very different instinct when it comes to using his body. Someday, I’d really love to see him lead a full-fledged sports drama.”
Ahn said he had been eager to return because of how much he values the show’s set and crew. “I usually try to let go of a character quickly once a project ends. But with ‘Flex X Cop,’ I wanted to come back soon. I really love this set,” he said.
He added that more than 90% of the Season 1 crew returned.
This marks Ahn Bo Hyun’s second round with director Kim Jae Hong and writer Kim Ba Da. The writer has said she created Jin Yi Soo with Ahn in mind and had been eyeing him for the role since My Name.
“She casually told me, ‘There’s a script I’d like to give you,’ but I think she still had her doubts,” Ahn recalled. “I’d mostly played serious characters, so it was understandable that she wondered whether I could pull off someone as high-energy as Jin Yi Soo.”
Those doubts disappeared after she watched an early cut of Season 1.
“She came to the set, smacked me on the back and said, ‘That was insane. I had no idea you’d take it that far,'” the actor said. “My version was more energetic and mischievous than what was on the page, and she embraced it.”
Speaking about his new partner Jung, Ahn admitted that his first impression was completely different from the person he came to know.
“Watching ‘Pachinko’ and ‘Anna,’ I thought she seemed very elegant and hard to approach,” he said. “But once we became close, I realized she’s incredibly down-to-earth and warm.”
He was also surprised by her Busan dialect. “It was the most authentic dialect I’ve ever heard. I told her, ‘You have to do a project where you speak in dialect. If we find a good project, let’s do it together,'” he said with a laugh.
Asked about the biggest change in his life during the two-year break between seasons, Ahn pointed to his younger sister’s recent wedding.
“She got married last week,” the actor shared. “It felt like I got a new family member and also sent one away at the same time. Family has always come first, but it made me want to devote myself to them even more.”
