Jang Gyu Ri has weighed in on viewers interpreting the relationship between Song Kang and Lee Jun Young’s characters in Four Hands, Two Sonatas through a BL lens.
In an interview following the drama’s finale, Jang said she had anticipated that reaction after reading the script.
“When I read it, Jung Yo and Bi O were so deeply connected through music that I thought some viewers might see their relationship that way,” she said. “Once a project is released, it belongs to the viewers, so I respect every interpretation.”
Jang played violist Hong Jae In, who becomes closely intertwined with piano prodigies Kang Bi O (Song Kang) and Choi Jung Yo (Lee Jun Young). The drama follows the trio’s friendship, love, rivalry and growth after they meet at an arts high school.
She added that she approached Jae In with an understanding that Bi O’s feelings toward Jung Yo were not simple.
“While playing Jae In, I was aware that Bi O had these complicated feelings toward Jung Yo and was drawn to him,” she said.
Jang also said she did not see Jae In’s own feelings for Bi O as something that necessarily had to end in romance.
“From my perspective playing her, I don’t think Jae In’s feelings for Bi O as a man continued that strongly,” she said. “I think it just may be part of her growth. I don’t think Jae In needs to end up with him for it to be a happy ending.”
She continued, “Loving Bi O is a very important part of Jae In’s life, but I never thought it was something big enough to destroy her life or make her lose herself. I believe Jae In will continue growing in her own way.”
