Song Kang is showing a more vulnerable side of pianist Kang Bi O in tvN’s Four Hands, Two Sonatas, as the character struggles with pressure, betrayal and memories of a very different relationship with music.
Song stars as Kang Bi O, a perfectionist pianist with extraordinary talent who has grown increasingly exhausted under the control and expectations of his mother, Kang Ji Hye (Yoon Se A).
In a recent episode, Bi O listens to classical music in the study of his maternal grandfather, Kang Seung Woon (Jung Jin Young), and recalls a childhood when he simply loved music for what it was.
That memory stands in sharp contrast to his present, where sitting at the piano has become tied to meeting other people’s expectations rather than his own enjoyment. Song conveys the change largely through subtle shifts in Bi O’s gaze and expression.
His relationship with Choi Jung Yo (Lee Jun Young) also takes a turn after Bi O discovers the truth Jung Yo had been hiding. Feeling betrayed by someone he had slowly begun to trust, Bi O pulls away from Jung Yo’s grasp when he calls his name and retreats to his room.
When Bi O later stops responding, Ji Hye goes to check on him and finds her son collapsed on the floor. The episode ends there, leaving his condition uncertain.
Rather than playing Bi O’s emotions broadly, Song portrays the character’s mounting pressure, loneliness and sense of betrayal through restrained expressions and body language. The contrast between Bi O’s childhood memories and his present-day performances further underscores how much his relationship with music has changed.
Four Hands, Two Sonatas, starring Song Kang, airs every Saturday and Sunday at 9:10 PM KST on tvN.
