Lee Chang Dong’s new Netflix film, Possible Love, has been chosen as South Korea’s official submission for the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) made the announcement on August 25th after selecting the project through a 15-member panel of industry experts led by prominent film critic Jung Sung Il. The judges praised Possible Love for its stunning mise-en-scène, sharp directorial vision, and Lee’s signature brand of deep humanism and complex character studies.
Possible Love follows two contrasting couples—a laid-off factory worker and his wife, alongside a documentary filmmaker and her husband—whose lives and hidden desires collide during a documentary project.
The film marks Lee’s long-awaited return to the director’s chair eight years after his critically acclaimed 2018 mystery drama Burning. It features an all-star ensemble cast led by Jeon Do Yeon, Sul Kyung Gu, Zo In Sung and Cho Yeo Jeong.
Ahead of its Oscar campaign, Possible Love is already making waves on the international festival circuit. The movie is set to compete at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival and will screen in the Special Presentations section at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival.
Possible Love arrives in select theaters on September 23rd before making its global debut on Netflix on November 6. The Academy will announce the official shortlist for the International Feature category later this year.
