Ahn Eun Jin says starring in a drama about a 10-year relationship with Seo Kang Joon has made her think more seriously about love, long-term relationships and marriage.
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Ahn Eun Jin opened up about how filming A Love Other Than Yours has changed the way she views relationships.
“Maintaining a relationship is really difficult. It takes a lot of effort,” Ahn Eun Jin said. “I’ve started thinking about how I would handle it if I had someone precious in my life someday.”
She added, “I vaguely dream that I might naturally have a relationship like that someday as well.”
The actress also said she often turns to her married friends with questions about long-term relationships.
“I constantly ask my friends, ‘What is married life like?’ and ‘How do you stay with someone for 10 years?’” she said.
Her friends tend to give similar answers, according to Ahn Eun Jin.
“They all say the same thing. You have to keep putting in effort and be grateful,” she explained. “There are disagreements and always things you have to work through. There are more responsibilities and things you have to deal with together as the relationship continues. I think that’s what you learn to work through.”
In A Love Other Than Yours, Ahn Eun Jin plays Lee Mi Do, a once-promising film director who is now going through a career slump. She has been in a 10-year relationship with Nam Gung Ho, played by Seo Kang Joon, but begins to waver after meeting someone who sees her in a different light.
Ahn Eun Jin said she had no trouble relating to Mi Do.
“It wasn’t difficult to understand Mi Do’s situation,” she said. “I understand what it’s like to dream about love, want to do well at work, and want to keep pursuing your dreams, but then face setbacks.”
“I think it’s natural to be drawn to someone who brings out your happiness and sees you with fresh eyes,” she continued.
Ahn Eun Jin described Mi Do as brave and full of energy, but also someone who goes through plenty of emotional ups and downs. She also pointed out that Mi Do has become so comfortable with Nam Gung Ho after 10 years together that she can sometimes take him for granted.
“There’s a certain sense of entitlement that can come with being in a relationship for 10 years,” she said.
Ahn Eun Jin also praised her co-star Seo Kang Joon, who plays her longtime partner in the drama.
“Early on, seeing how much effort Seo Kang Joon put into studying the script motivated me,” she said. “I found myself thinking, ‘Why can’t I be that thorough, too?’”
She praised his detailed approach to his character, saying, “His preparation is incredibly thorough and almost perfect, which made me want to be more meticulous as well.”
At the same time, she noted that Seo Kang Joon knows when to let go of all that preparation once filming begins.
“Once we’re on set, he knows how to put all that research and preparation aside when necessary,” she said, praising his ability to balance careful preparation with natural acting.
