Director Kim Jae Hyun is taking responsibility for the much-talked-about “office look” worn by Ahn Eun Jin in Dynamite Kiss, admitting he’s gone a bit overboard with the styling choice.
The outfit in question appeared in a scene where Da Rim (Ahn Eun Jin) shows up to work wearing clothes supposedly chosen by In Ae (Nam Gi Ae), the mother of Ji Hyuk (Jang Ki Yong), based on her son’s taste. While the setup was meant to be playful, viewers reacted with jokes like, “Is Da Rim heading to a fan signing?”—quickly turning the look into an online talking point.
Addressing the reaction, Kim Jae Hyun didn’t dodge the blame. “I’m sorry. That was my pick,” he said with a laugh. “There was actually a very clear setup: Da Rim was supposed to go to work wearing Da Jeong’s clothes. In episode three, there was a scene where she chose an outfit in Da Jeong’s room, and Sun Woo fixes her makeup. We debated it and ended up cutting that scene—and I think that was a bad call.”
He added that without that context, the outfit likely felt confusing. “If that scene had stayed in, I think the audience would’ve understood Da Rim’s look much more easily,” he said.
Kim explained that his intention was to lean fully into the romance. “I wanted to express—very enthusiastically—that feeling people have when they’re in love and want to look attractive to the other person,” he said. “That’s where I think I overdid it. To be clear, it wasn’t Eun Jin’s choice. It was mine.”
He went on to reflect more candidly. “Honestly, it’s not something I’d wear to work myself. But I think I leaned too hard into the ‘because it’s a drama’ mindset,” he admitted. “If we’d more carefully shown In Ae pushing her son’s ‘taste,’ or Da Rim reacting with, ‘Ji Hyuk likes this kind of thing?’ the comedy would’ve landed without making viewers uncomfortable. I’ve thought about that a lot. I’ll do better next time.”
