Shin Mina playfully teased Ju Jihoon about how his looks have changed over the past 19 years, saying he was “so pretty” when they first worked together but now has a more mature charm.
The two actors appeared in a video released on W Korea’s YouTube channel on November 2nd to discuss their upcoming Disney Plus series The Remarried Empress, marking their third collaboration after Lucifer (2007) and The Naked Kitchen (2009).
Asked whether she felt more comfortable with Ju now or 19 years ago, Shin chose the present. “He was really pretty back then,” she said with a laugh. “He had this bright, playful charm in ‘Lucifer’ and ‘The Naked Kitchen.’ Now he has a different kind of appeal that comes with age and experience.”
She explained that their years of experience and familiarity with each other had made working together easier. Shin then pointed out an amusing coincidence across their three projects. “You know what? We’ve never actually ended up as a proper couple in any of them. They’re all doomed romances,” she joked.
The actress then recalled struggling to keep a straight face during their first shoot for The Remarried Empress in the Czech Republic because of Ju’s extravagant costume.
“He was wearing something with this elaborate, accordion-like lace that looked like fishnet,” she said. “It was our first day of filming, and I burst out laughing while he was delivering his lines, so we had to do another take.”
Ju admitted that many of his costumes were revealing, with plunging necklines and elaborate details. “The costume team kept saying they looked great, but I felt like I was being talked into believing it,” he joked.
“Even though I used to be a model and have worn all kinds of clothes, even people around me were turning red,” he added. “I thought, ‘We need to change this.’ We could barely get any filming done.”
He also revealed that he nearly wore a crown for a key scene but pushed hard to remove it. “They said I should wear it to stay true to the novel, so I tried it on, but I looked like Sun Wukong,” he said, referring to the famous Monkey King. “I thought it would take viewers right out of the scene.”
Based on the popular webtoon, The Remarried Empress follows Empress Navier (Shin Mina), who demands the right to remarry after her husband, Emperor Sovieshu (Ju Jihoon), announces he wants a divorce.
