Hwang In Youp talked about his close friendship with Hyeri after their appearance together at a baseball game sparked dating rumors.
Hwang In Youp spoke about his experience working with Hyeri in an interview on August 19th at a cafe in Seoul. The interview came after the finale of ENA’s Dream to You.
The romantic comedy follows genius film director Woo Soo Bin (played by Hwang In Youp) as he reunites with his first love, freelance reporter Joo Yi Jae (Hyeri), who has forgotten about her own dreams.
Hwang In Youp played Soo Bin, a film director who still has strong feelings for his first love. His affectionate acting and honest confessions helped bring the romance to life, while his character’s playful side and jealousy added to his charm.
When asked about his chemistry with Hyeri, Hwang In Youp said having a good relationship with his co-star was important. “I think it’s important for the actors to have a really good relationship when filming a romantic comedy,” he said. “We joked around a lot, so our chemistry was really great.” He added, “Hyeri and I leaned on each other while filming. I’m happy that we became good friends.”
Their natural chemistry also caught viewers’ attention before the drama even premiered.
Photos and videos of Hwang In Youp and Hyeri at a baseball game went viral. In one video, Hwang In Youp was seen giving Hyeri his tumbler after she appeared to be struggling with the spicy food she was eating. The moment led some fans to wonder if the two were dating in real life.
When asked about the dating rumors, Hwang In Youp laughed. “I’m happy whenever I hear things like that,” he said. “I think showing good chemistry is important because it helps viewers become more immersed in the drama. If people see us that way, I’m grateful.” He then added, “To be clear, I’ve made a good new friend.”
Hwang In Youp also explained what actually happened at the baseball game. “It was my tumbler,” he said. “There was a lot of food at the game, and Hyeri was eating spicy chicken skewers. She was fanning her mouth, so I thought, ‘It must be spicy,’ and gave her my tumbler.”
He said he never expected the small gesture to attract so much attention. “I don’t know where the video was filmed, but I never expected people to react like that. I saw the video later and thought it was nice.”
After the video went viral, Hwang In Youp said he even talked to Hyeri about the unexpected dating rumors. “I called her and said, ‘Hey, Hyeri. They’re saying this about us,’” he recalled. Hyeri reportedly replied, “I know. It’s so strange.”
The baseball game was also a memorable experience for Hwang In Youp. He said it was his first time attending a baseball game since elementary school. “It was fascinating to experience that kind of culture again,” he said. “I was really focused on the game and had a lot of fun.”
Looking back, Hwang In Youp believes their close friendship naturally showed on screen. “As we filmed the drama, our good relationship and chemistry naturally came through without us even realizing it,” he said. “I’m glad those natural moments were well-received.”
