Oh Young Soo, the 80-year-old actor who won a Golden Globe for his role in Squid Game, has had his sexual harassment conviction overturned in an appellate trial.
The Suwon District Court’s criminal appeals division reversed the original guilty verdict on the afternoon of November 11th.
Oh Young Soo was first indicted in November 2022 on charges of sexually harassing a theater troupe member. The incidents allegedly took place in 2017, and included accusations that he hugged her during a walk and kissed her on the cheek in front of her home.
The case had a long history: the alleged victim filed a complaint in 2021, which police initially dropped. However, prosecutors reopened the investigation and indicted him after she formally objected.
The first trial found Oh Young Soo guilty of the charges. The court sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program.
Oh Young Soo immediately appealed the ruling. In his final statement to the appeals court, he pleaded for leniency, stating, “I am ashamed to stand in court at this age. An 80-year life has collapsed without value. It is futile. It is unbearable. Please allow me to return to my place.”
