Youn Yuh Jung could be headed for another history-making moment.
The Korean screen legend has earned an Emmy nomination for Netflix’s Beef Season 2, following her historic Oscar win for Minari in 2021.
According to the final nominees for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, announced July 8 local time by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Youn is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
In Beef Season 2, Youn plays Chairwoman Park, a Korean billionaire who buys an elite country club. The character commands the room with a quiet, intimidating presence.
Her role also drew buzz for pairing her with Song Kang Ho, who plays Dr. Kim, as an older-woman-younger-man married couple. The casting became an even bigger talking point after reports that Youn personally helped persuade Song to join the show.
Youn became the first Korean actor to win an Oscar when she took home Best Supporting Actress for Minari at the 93rd Academy Awards. If she wins the Emmy, she would become the first Korean actor to win both an Academy Award and an Emmy. Squid Game star Lee Jung Jae previously won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in 2022.
Beef Season 2 also marks the return of Korean American creator Lee Sung Jin, who again serves as writer and director. The first season swept the Emmys with eight wins, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Steven Yeun and Outstanding Lead Actress for Ali Wong.
This year, Beef Season 2 landed a strong showing across major categories, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Lead Actress for Carey Mulligan, Lead Actor for Oscar Isaac, Supporting Actor for Charles Melton, and nods for casting, contemporary costumes, directing and editing.
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
