The story behind why Song Kang Ho almost didn’t join Beef 2 has been revealed.

Director Lee Sung Jin shared that he originally wanted to cast top Korean actors Youn Yuh Jung and Song Kang Ho as a married couple at a virtual press conference on April 7th.

Creator and director Lee Sung Jin and actor Charles Melton shared how the production managed to land the powerhouse duo of Youn Yuh Jung and Song Kang Ho as a married couple during a virtual press conference on April 7th.

Lee said he wanted the new season to feel authentic, explaining, “I wanted to incorporate many Korean elements, so we set a major goal of casting Korea’s best actors, Youn Yuh Jung and Song Kang Ho.”

However, Song Kang Ho didn’t accept the role right away. After reading the script, he told Lee, “I’m not sure if this role suits me.”

It was Youn Yuh Jung who changed his mind. She personally called him and said, “You are Song Kang Ho. You are Korea’s top actor, you can do this.” Thanks to her, he joined the project. Lee later said, “The scenes featuring the two of them are the highlight of my career.”

Director Bong Joon Ho even visited the set and joked with Lee, asking, “Are you really going to shoot the scenes with those two like this? Are you sure?”

Season 2 of Beef follows a Gen Z couple who get caught up in a troubled marriage at a country club. Youn plays a powerful club owner, while Song plays her second husband. The new season premieres on Netflix on April 16th.
