So Ji Sub opened up about his career, hip-hop albums, and more on You Quiz on the Block.

On the October 12 broadcast of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, So Ji Sub appeared as one of the guests. Recalling the difficult start to his acting career after being a swimmer all his life, the actor shared, “If I won a medal in the national high school competition, I was promised a seat to the college. I won third place, and before entering school, I had a three-month break. I had a friend who was attending a famous acting school back then, and I auditioned for a jeans model with him. I made it to the finals with Won Bin and Song Seung Heon.”

At the time of his debut, many people raised voices against him because he was considered not to have the “typical handsome look.” So Ji Sub explained, “When I debuted, the popular actors were Jang Dong Gun, Han Jae Suk, and Song Seung Heon. They all have handsome faces with thick double eyelids. But I don’t have double eyelids and my eyes are small, so I was told that I shouldn’t be an actor.”

“I had it rough when I made my debut,” he recalled. “I was introverted, so it wasn’t like this job suited me really well. My first purpose was making money as a breadwinner. I pushed myself even harder because I had to make a living for my family. I still have that in me. (That pressure) has gotten lighter, but responsibility is what drives me.”

Saying that So Ji Sub is a man who doesn’t hesitate to do what he likes, Host Yoo Jae Suk mentioned the nine hip-hop albums the actor has released. Putting his head down in embarrassment, So Ji Sub said, “There’s a reason I released those albums.” He elaborated, “I wanted to show something to my fans when I met them, and I didn’t want to sing someone else’s songs, so I thought it’d be nice if I could greet them with my own songs.”

So Ji Sub also talked about his famous nickname “So Ganzi (meaning fashionable). “That nickname was burdensome at first, but now I really like it and love it,” he shared. “In the beginning, I paid special attention to my clothes because of that nickname. And that’s why there are so many weird styles (that I tried) and so many pictures of them.”

Lastly, he added, “My favorite number is 51,” he said. Nothing in the world is 100% perfect.” He continued, “49% and 51% is a 2% difference, but it determines victory or defeat. So I always strive for 51%. I’m 50.1% satisfied with my job, and I want this number to increase. My worries these days are about how I can live a happier life with the people I love and how I can become a better actor.”
