The Assassin(s) director Hur Jin Ho and the film’s production team have been reported to the police.
Lee Jong Bae, a former Seoul Metropolitan Council member from the People Power Party, announced on September 29th that he had filed a formal complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency against Hur and the film’s production staff. He accused them of defamation for allegedly presenting false information about the historical events depicted in the film.
Lee claimed that the plural title The Assassin(s) suggests that someone other than Moon Se Gwang, who was identified as the shooter in the assassination of former South Korean President Park Chung Hee’s wife, Yuk Young Soo, may have been involved. He argued that this could lead viewers to believe that Park Chung Hee or those close to him were involved in planning the crime.
The Assassin(s), which was released on September 23rd, is based on the 1974 assassination of First Lady Yuk Young Soo. The film stars Yoo Hae Jin, Park Hae Il and Lee Min Ho.
The controversy centers on scenes in which characters raise the possibility that people close to Park Chung Hee or the then-Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) may have been involved in planning the assassination.
However, the film does not identify or establish who was behind the assassination.
The production team previously addressed the historical distortion controversy in a statement released on September 28th. They explained that The Assassin(s) is a fictional work that uses historical records from the time as a foundation while incorporating fictional elements.
“We are not defining any specific individual as being behind the incident anywhere in the movie,” the production team said. They added that the film was not intended to deny or distort established historical facts.
