Agent Kim Reactivated is giving fans a little more after its 10-episode run.
The SBS Friday-Saturday drama will air two special episodes on July 31 and August 1 following its July 25 finale, extending the show’s run by another week.
Studio S said July 14 that the team originally planned just one special, but strong viewer response prompted SBS to add a second.
The format is still being discussed. The specials could feature cast talk segments with stars So Ji Sub, Yoon Kyung Ho and Choi Dae Hoon, along with behind-the-scenes footage and unaired scenes.
The leading option, however, is a studio recap covering Episodes 1 through 10, with a separate editing team already assembled for the project.
The move could spell trouble for MBC’s A Bona Fide Killer, starring Kong Hyo Jin, which premieres July 31 in the same time slot. With Agent Kim Reactivated specials airing on back-to-back nights, the new drama now faces added competition out of the gate.
The extension comes after Agent Kim Reactivated surged to a 22.3% rating with its sixth episode, a number that reportedly caught even SBS off guard.
“No one at SBS expected 22.3%,” one insider said, calling the result an astonishing record during a traditionally slow period for dramas.
The insider also offered a theory behind the show’s breakout success, saying Netflix’s Teach You a Lesson had already reignited viewers’ appetite for revenge dramas.
“People have been angry lately over the stock market crash and South Korea’s elimination in the World Cup round of 32,” the insider said. “In that climate, ‘Agent Kim Reactivated’ may have benefited from its mix of a father’s love and the satisfaction of watching villains get what they deserve.”
Agent Kim Reactivated concludes July 25, with its two specials airing July 31 and August 1 at 9:50 PM KST.
