Ryu Jun Yeol had a simple request for the director of Netflix’s upcoming thriller Mousetrap: knock him out whenever the action starts.

Ryu joined co-stars Sul Kyung Gu and Lee Kyu Hyung, along with director Kim Hong Sun, at a press event for the series on August 20th, where the cast shared stories from filming its action sequences.

Inspired by the Korean folktale “The Mouse That Ate Fingernails,” Mousetrap follows novelist Moon Jae (played by Ryu) after a mysterious figure steals his name, face and entire life. He teams up with loan shark No Ja (played by Sul) to reclaim his identity while detective Soon Yong (played by Lee) pursues them.

Director Kim said action is not the series’ main focus, but he wanted the chase scenes to feel rough and desperate, with characters scrambling to escape or stop one another.

Sul, who handles much of the fighting, joked that whenever the action started, Ryu was either “knocked out and asleep” or had already gone home.

Ryu happily admitted there was some truth to that. “I almost feel guilty answering a question about the action because Sul Kyung Gu did basically all of it,” he said. “In my defense, I was the one who asked the director, ‘Please knock me out. Just make me look dead.'”

“Everyone is in the middle of this intense action, and I don’t think the audience wants to watch Moon Jae just standing there either,” Ryu joked. “Rather than have people suffer through seeing my face, I figured I’d just disappear.”

He added that the arrangement worked out very well for him. “I got to enjoy the luxury of taking it easy during the action scenes. Sul Kyung Gu suffered enough for both of us.”

Sul quickly pointed out, “Once he was unconscious, I had to carry him out after finishing all the action.” Hearing that, Ryu laughed, saying, “He practically raised me on his back.”

Lee Kyu Hyung also joined the teasing, recalling a large-scale action sequence filmed overnight. “There was one person sleeping through all of it,” he said, pointing to Ryu.

Sul added, “He even sleeps in the water.”

Mousetrap premieres on Netflix on August 28th.
