Police confirmed that Yang Jae Woong, best known as Hani‘s boyfriend, will be summoned as a suspect as early as this week over the death of a patient at his clinic, after which authorities will decide whether to formally refer the case to prosecutors.

On August 19th, Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police announced that four additional nurses and staff at Yang’s Bucheon clinic had been booked on charges of violating medical law, bringing the number of individuals under investigation to 11. They are accused of administering medication without a physician’s prescription and carrying out unauthorized medical procedures.

The patient’s family had previously accused the attending doctor, nurses, and assistants of involuntary manslaughter and professional negligence, later adding Yang himself to the case.

In March, the National Human Rights Commission requested a probe by the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, citing falsified medical records and allegations of aiding and abetting. The commission pointed to mismatches between the medical staff who actually carried out restraint orders and the names recorded in the patient’s file, as well as a 23-minute discrepancy between the actual and documented times. The records also failed to state why the 30-year-old patient had been restrained or isolated.

The commission stated, “Staff testimony that such practices had been carried out for a long time could not have been possible without Yang Jae Woong’s instruction or tacit approval.”

Police have confirmed they will move forward with a full investigation, with Yang’s questioning expected to play a key role in whether the case proceeds to prosecution.

The case dates back to May 2023, when a woman in her 30s died just 17 days after being admitted to Yang’s hospital for diet pill addiction treatment. Her cause of death was reported as pseudo-obstruction of the intestines. Yang later issued an apology expressing “deep sorrow” but denied negligence, insisting restraints were unavoidable and that the core issue was phentermine abuse.

Yang and Hani announced plans to marry in September 2023, but the ceremony was postponed following the patient’s death and the ongoing investigation.
