The South Korean government is launching FANOMENON, an ambitious new K-pop festival designed to rival global music events like Coachella and Lollapalooza.

“The goal of FANOMENON is to build on the global momentum of K-culture and turn it into a festival that promotes Korea to the world,” said Park Jin Young, also known as J.Y. Park, JYP Entertainment’s founder and chairman of the Committee for Cultural Exchange.

The South Korean government has announced plans for FANOMENON, a large-scale K-pop festival designed to showcase K-culture on a global stage while boosting tourism and the country’s economy.

The initiative was unveiled on July 27th by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Committee for Cultural Exchange at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul. The festival’s name combines the words “fan” and “phenomenon,” highlighting the powerful global fandom that has fueled K-pop’s worldwide success.

FANOMENON is expected to attract around 520,000 attendees, including 200,000 international visitors, making it one of the largest cultural events in Asia. The Korea Culture and Tourism Institute estimates the festival could generate 1 trillion won ($720 million) in economic impact.

The festival is scheduled to run from December 2th to December 12, 2027, with events taking place across Seoul and nearby Goyang. In addition to concerts by top K-pop artists, the festival will feature a fan-driven awards ceremony and a K-culture exhibition celebrating Korean entertainment, fashion, food, and more.

Major events will be held at the Seoul Arena, a new 28,000-seat venue currently under construction in Seoul, as well as KINTEX, one of Korea’s largest convention centers located in Goyang. Organizers plan to make FANOMENON an annual event every December.

The country’s four largest entertainment companies—HYBE, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment—are all expected to participate alongside their artists. Organizers hope the festival’s unique awards ceremony, which recognizes artists based on fan engagement, will encourage participation from many of K-pop’s biggest stars and establish the event as a prestigious annual celebration.

In the long term, the government hopes FANOMENON will grow into a world-renowned music festival comparable to major U.S. events such as Coachella and Lollapalooza.

“The leaders of the four major entertainment companies all support the vision of creating a festival for people around the world,” Park said. “The industry is united behind the project because it also offers strong business potential.”

Officials also acknowledged that Korea still lacks enough large-scale concert venues for global superstar acts. Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young said the government plans to continue expanding the country’s performance infrastructure, allowing the festival to grow in scale over time.
