Netflix’s upcoming series The East Palace has unveiled its main poster, main trailer and special poster.
The East Palace follows Gu Cheon (played by Nam Joo Hyuk), who can move between the human world and the Realm of Gwi, and Saeng Gang (Roh Yoon Seo), a palace maid hiding a secret. After being summoned by the king (Cho Seung Woo), the two begin investigating a curse haunting the East Palace.
The series is drawing attention not only for its cast, but also for its creative team. It is written by Kwon So Ra and Seo Jae Won of The Guest and Bulgasal: Immortal Souls, and directed by Choi Jung Gyu of The Devil Judge and Children of Nobody.
The main poster shows Gu Cheon standing in the middle of a pond filled with the red energy of the Realm of Gwi, while Saeng Gang pulls hard on the rough rope binding him. Gu Cheon can cross into the Realm of Gwi, while Saeng Gang can hear its sounds, raising curiosity over what secrets the two will uncover inside the palace.

The main trailer pulls viewers into the eerie world of The East Palace. Inside the beautiful but chillingly silent palace, a dark presence begins to spread. A ghostly voice whispers into the king’s ear, “I will eradicate the royal bloodline.” Sensing that the events of “30 years ago” are happening again, the king calls in Gu Cheon, a spirit-catcher, and assigns Saeng Gang to keep watch over him.
Following the king’s orders, Gu Cheon and Saeng Gang secretly move between life and death, encountering strange and sinister beings along the way. As Gu Cheon enters the blood-red Realm of Gwi and faces spirits with his sword, the resentment and secrets buried beneath the royal family slowly begin to surface.
Director Choi Jung Gyu said of Nam, “When I first saw him, I was convinced he was someone who could choose to enter the Spirit Realm and stand against fate. ‘The East Palace’ was a story he had to lead, and I could feel both his sense of responsibility and his passion for acting.”
On Roh, he said, “Every time I watched her work, I felt this sense of her breaking through something. I was sure her natural charm and strengths were a perfect fit for Saeng Gang. Once we began working together, I realized she was an incredibly bold actor, and I was impressed by how she pushed through situations with honest, straightforward acting.”
Choi also shared his trust in Cho, with whom he reunites through the series. “Ever since working with him a long time ago, it had been my dream to work with him again. This project made that dream come true. Cho prepares his performances in incredible detail, and watching that detail turn into powerful acting the moment cameras roll was cathartic.”
The East Palace premieres July 17th, only on Netflix.
