Netflix has officially announced its upcoming mystery noir series, tentatively titled Outback (working title), starring Ryu Jun Yeol, Hong Kyung, Jung Ho Yeon, Won Ji An and Justin H. Min.
Based on the popular webtoon G’Day, the series follows a man who travels to Australia after his sister’s sudden death and becomes determined to uncover the truth behind what happened to her.
Hong Kyung plays Zion, who receives the devastating news of his sister’s death and travels to Australia. In an unfamiliar city, he begins to uncover troubling questions surrounding her death. What starts as a search for answers soon turns into an obsessive pursuit of the truth.
Outback (working title) aims to capture the dark and mysterious atmosphere of the original webtoon while reimagining its characters, backstories and relationships for the screen.
Han Jun Hee, who worked on D.P. and the Weak Hero franchise, serves as the series’ creator and executive producer. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Park Hyun Woo behind Weak Hero Class 2.
“We wanted to use the strengths of the television medium to explore the characters’ emotions and relationships in greater depth,” Han Jun Hee said. “Beyond the thrill of uncovering the mystery, we wanted to portray the vulnerability, inner conflicts, and growth of young people caught in difficult circumstances.”
The series is directed by Jeon Du Gwan, who previously worked on D.P. Season 2 and Seen: A Bizarre Story.
The newly announced cast has already drawn attention from fans around the world.
Ryu Jun Yeol, known for Revelations, The 8 Show, The Owl and Believer, plays Han Minhyuk, a mysterious figure at the center of the investigation.
Hong Kyung plays Zion, a man who travels to Australia to uncover the truth behind his sister’s death. As he follows the final traces she left behind, his search gradually becomes an obsession.
Jung Ho Yeon, who rose to international fame with Squid Game and Hope, plays Smiley, an unpredictable livestream creator.
Won Ji An plays Si Young, Zion’s sister, whose sudden death sets the story in motion and becomes the source of much of the series’ mystery.
Justin H. Min, known for The Umbrella Academy, BEEF and After Yang, plays Scott, a Korean-Australian police officer who becomes involved in the unfolding investigation.
With its intriguing mystery and international cast, Outback (WT) is set to deliver a tense story of secrets, obsession, and complicated relationships against the backdrop of Australia.
Outback will be available exclusively on Netflix.
