Netflix’s upcoming series The East Palace has released its first teaser poster and trailer.

After drawing global attention with its date announcement poster, The East Palace is giving viewers a closer look at its eerie world. The series follows Gu Cheon (Nam Joo Hyuk), who has the ability to move between the world of spirits and the real world, and Saeng Gang (Roh Yoon Seo), a palace maid hiding a secret. When the King (Cho Seung Woo) summons them, the two begin investigating the curse haunting the East Palace.

The teaser poster leaves a striking impression by capturing both the spirit world and the real world in one image. Inside a palace shrouded in dark clouds, Gu Cheon stands solemnly with a sword in hand. The tagline, “Between the Real World and the Spirit World, Crossing boundaries to unearth the truth,” raises anticipation for Gu Cheon’s journey across both realms.

The newly released teaser opens with a tense, ominous mood as Gu Cheon, a “spirit-catcher,” makes his first appearance. The person who calls him to the palace is none other than the King. As someone who does not believe in ghosts or superstition, the King’s decision to summon Gu Cheon immediately sparks curiosity. Once inside the palace, Gu Cheon senses that it is filled with deep resentment.

To find the “won-qwi,” Gu Cheon decides to enter the Realm of Gwi himself, while palace maid Saeng Gang watches as he walks into a pond. Soon, the spirit world unfolds before him. Filled with dark red, bloodlike energy, it appears as another side of reality. Gu Cheon begins fighting off spirits with his sword and leaves behind the ominous line, “Those who sin are punished eventually.”

Meanwhile, in the real world, Saeng Gang is seen marking her forehead with blood and a look of firm resolve, adding to the mystery. The King and the Queen Dowager (Jang Young Nam) also come face-to-face with strange phenomena, heightening the tension. The line, “They say that once you enter the palace, you leave only in death,” raises the stakes as questions grow over whether Gu Cheon will make it out alive and what force is threatening the East Palace.

The East Palace premieres July 17th, only on Netflix.
