Excitement is building for this summer’s big movie releases, with South Korean cinema regaining its vitality following the success of The King’s Warden. From Cannes Film Festival invitees to top-star-led comedies, a diverse lineup of tentpole movies is expected to lead the box office race.

Showbox has had a strong first half of the year with back-to-back hits, The King’s Warden and Salmokji: Whispering Water. The distributor is now aiming for the summer box office with director Yeon Sang Ho’s brand-new zombie film Colony, set to release on May 21st. The film marks Jun Ji Hyun’s return to theaters after 11 years and has been invited to the Midnight Screening at the Cannes Film Festival. Fans are excited about the “evolving zombie” concept and Yeon Sang Ho’s signature dystopian style. After his success with Train to Busan, expectations are high to see if Project Silence can deliver both commercial hits and perfect the zombie genre.

Plus M Entertainment is counting on director Na Hong Jin’s new film Hope as a major summer release. This is his first feature in about 10 years since The Wailing, and it’s an SF story centered on mysterious events in a village near the DMZ. With a production budget of around 50 billion won ($33.4 million) and a star-studded global cast including Hwang Jung Min, Zo In Sung, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, the film has already attracted significant attention. Hope has been selected for the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival—the first Korean film in four years to achieve this—which has raised expectations even higher. If the Cannes reception creates pre-release buzz, Hope could be a strong contender for the summer box office crown.

Lotte Entertainment is betting on the summer comedy Wild Sing. The film’s main charm comes from the surprising transformations of its lead actors, Gang Dong Won and Um Tae Goo, as they play members of a dance group trying to make a comeback. Gang Dong Won takes on a high-energy dancer role, while Um Tae Goo becomes a dynamic rapper, and even the promotional music videos have already generated a lot of buzz. As a lighthearted comedy amid a season of heavier films, Wild Sing is aiming to win over summer audiences.

This summer’s box office is shaping up to be a battle between genre films invited to the Cannes Film Festival and popcorn movies showcasing actors’ image transformations. Attention is focused on whether Showbox can maintain its winning streak, and if Plus M and Lotte Entertainment can alter the box office landscape with their distinct strategies.
