The sci-fi thriller Project Hail Mary took second place with 274,733 viewers and a cumulative total of over two million. As Salmokji: Whispering Water continues to gain positive word of mouth, horror fans are flocking to the actual filming location. Viral images of hundreds of cars heading there in the early hours of the morning have caused a stir on social media. One netizen remarked, “I thought it was a horror movie, but when I saw the crowd, it felt more like a festival.”
The reactions in the online community have shifted from genuine fear to playful humor. Users jokingly said, “Even if ghosts tried to appear, they’d be drained by the crowd’s cheerful energy and disappear” and “The ghosts are probably about to file a noise complaint.”

The area is now expected to become a popular tourist destination, with some proposing trendy nicknames like Salmokdan-gil. People are already jokingly pitching business ideas for the area, suggesting, “Selling snacks at the entrance would be a gold mine,” or “We should do ghost cosplays and set up a photo booth.”
One visitor shared that even when technology fails, the atmosphere stays lively: “When the GPS glitche out in the middle of nowhere, nobody panics—instead, they yell ‘I hit the jackpot!’ and immediately start filming Reels. It really shows that for Koreans, the chance to make viral content is more important than any ghost story.”
The bone-chilling horror of Salmokji: Whispering Water has jumped off the screen and turned into a massive, real-life cultural obsession.
