IU and Byeon Woo Seok are reuniting a decade after their first on-screen encounter—this time as romantic leads in the upcoming drama Perfect Crown.
The pair appeared at a press conference on April 6th at Josun Palace in Gangnam, Seoul, ahead of the MBC Friday–Saturday series. Set in an alternate modern-day Korea where a constitutional monarchy still exists, the drama follows Seong Hee Joo (IU), a wealthy and accomplished woman who struggles with her commoner status, and Grand Prince Yian (Byeon Woo Seok), a royal who must carefully conceal his true self.
Even before its premiere, the drama has been generating buzz thanks to the star power of its leads—but what’s really catching attention is their shared history. IU and Byeon Woo Seok previously appeared together in the 2016 drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, where Byeon had a brief role as IU’s ex-boyfriend who cheated on her with her friend.
Reflecting on their reunion, IU joked, “Ten years ago, he played the boyfriend who cheated on me with my best friend—but maybe he’s here to redeem himself, because now he’s come back in such a cool role.” Byeon echoed the sentiment, saying, “I’m really happy we get to build on that connection from ten years ago in a much bigger way this time. IU made the set feel so comfortable and helped me a lot with my performance.”
IU takes on the role of Seong Hee Joo, a CEO who has it all—looks, intelligence, and wealth—except for one thing: status. “She’s a character full of ambition and temper, but also has a cute and charming side,” IU said. “That complexity made it an easy choice for me.”
For Byeon, the project marks his first drama in two years since his breakout success with Lovely Runner. Addressing concerns about his acting following the teaser release, he remained composed: “All the attention is something I’m grateful for as an actor, but it also comes with responsibility. I worked closely with the director to deepen my performance and did my best so viewers can fully connect with Yian’s emotions and narrative.”
Director Park Joon Hwa also expressed strong confidence in his leads, saying, “The biggest strength of our drama is these two actors. When I first met IU and Byeon Woo Seok, I thought, ‘They were born to be royalty.’ Both their acting and visuals made it exciting to watch the monitor every day. Viewers will feel a different kind of excitement in every episode.”
Perfect Crown premieres on April 10th at 9:40 PM KST.
