Jun Han of Xdinary Heroes has come under fire for recent comments interpreted by many as racially insensitive and supportive of eugenic ideas. On June 30th, JYP Entertainment released an official apology addressing the controversy.
“We sincerely apologize to everyone who was hurt by Jun Han’s careless words,” the agency stated. “Jun Han is taking this matter very seriously and is deeply reflecting on the pain and disappointment caused by his thoughtless remarks.”
JYP also acknowledged shortcomings in how they educate their artists. “We recognize our own responsibility for not providing sufficient education. Going forward, we will pay closer attention to prevent such incidents from recurring and will thoroughly educate our artists on social awareness, sensitivity, and how to communicate with the public more thoughtfully, so they can grow into mature individuals with sound values.”
Jun Han also issued a handwritten apology, saying, “I sincerely apologize for the hurt and discomfort caused by my careless comment. I now realize my words reflected a biased view, and I am deeply remorseful. I apologize once again to anyone who felt offended or hurt by my lack of historical and social awareness, and sensitivity. I will continue to learn and grow so I can act with proper understanding moving forward. From now on, I will be more mindful and responsible in everything I say and do.”
The controversy erupted when Jun Han responded to a fan who said they were involved in PCR-related genetic research. He asked, “Can you amplify only the genes that help cure disease? I heard Black people have more cells in their ears, so they have better hearing—and that’s why they’re so good at music. I was always jealous of that. Is something like this possible? Gathering the advantages of races, like White people’s superior sugar processing ability and Black people’s physical abilities, with the brain power of Asians and Indians.”
His remarks quickly drew criticism online, with many netizens calling them racially charged and supportive of eugenic ideology. Eugenics, a discredited pseudoscience aimed at improving the genetic quality of humans through selective breeding, was notoriously used by Nazi Germany to justify atrocities, including the Holocaust.
