The sequel to K-Pop Demon Hunters will be released in theaters, Netflix has confirmed.
Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos made the announcement at the Bloomberg Screen Time event in Los Angeles on September 30th (local time.)
“The follow-up to K-Pop Demon Hunters will be presented in a large-scale theatrical format. You can look forward to it,” Sarandos said. He also revealed that Netflix plans to give the sequel a longer theatrical window before making it available on VOD or streaming.
Netflix has been exploring different ways to balance theatrical releases with its streaming platform. Spanish film La Bola Negra will receive a 45-day exclusive theatrical run, marking the first time a Netflix original has been given such an extended window. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, which is scheduled for release next year, and the animated Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory will also be released in theaters.
Meanwhile, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, a spin-off of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Brad Pitt, will be released in IMAX theaters this November. It will be the first Netflix film to receive an IMAX release.
Sarandos explained that Netflix is looking for ways to serve moviegoers who want to see films in theaters while also protecting the value of its streaming platform.
“We are constantly considering how to best serve movie fans who want to see films in theaters, and how to release our films theatrically without compromising the value of the Netflix platform afterward,” he said. “Promoting our films globally is also a significant consideration.”
Sarandos also noted that family films tend to have high rewatch rates, while art films such as La Bola Negra can benefit from longer theatrical runs. Netflix plans to use these insights when shaping its future theatrical release strategies.
Released last year, K-Pop Demon Hunters was produced by Sony Pictures and distributed on Netflix. The action-fantasy animated film follows Huntrix—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—three K-pop superstars who secretly protect the world from supernatural threats.
The film surpassed 300 million viewing hours within five months of its release, making it Netflix’s most-watched film of all time.
