Public backlash is intensifying against psychiatrist Yang Jae Woong, who has been sued for negligence in the death of a patient. As details of the case emerge, criticism is mounting not only for the patient’s death but also for the lack of response shown to the bereaved family after the incident.

The lack of genuine sympathy or condolence shown for over two months following the incident has raised questions about Yang’s suitability as a psychiatrist, a profession that requires a deep, compassionate connection with patients.

It was revealed on July 28th that a 30-year-old patient, who had been admitted to the hospital for treatment of diet pill addiction, passed away on May 27th, 17 days after admission. Her cause of death was intestinal pseudo-obstruction. The patient had sought help at the facility after watching Dr. Yang on TV. However, it was revealed that she had been restrained to the bed for two hours until she lost consciousness following severe abdominal distension and nasal bleeding.

CCTV footage released by the bereaved family shows the patient banging on the door, seeking help for her abdominal pain. However, the hospital staff gave her sedatives and tied her to the bed instead of providing appropriate medical care or transferring her to another hospital. Questions have been raised about why the 30-year-old patient, who was cognitively intact, was confined to an isolation room and neglected for an extended period. Although intestinal pseudo-obstruction is not a common disease, there appears to have been no appropriate treatment for her abdominal pain.

The response following the incident has also been met with controversy. Yang released a statement on July 29, saying, “I cannot express how devastated I am. I sincerely apologize to the bereaved family who have lost their loved one and are now in deep sorrow.”

However, the patient’s family expressed their anger, stating, “He sent a lawyer to us and made a public statement instead of apologizing. He didn’t even look at us when we protested in front of the hospital.”

Yang Jae Woong and his brother, Yang Jae Jin, also a psychiatrist, have gained popularity through various television programs. The two brothers also operate a YouTube channel with over 660,000 subscribers. The last video was uploaded in February, and it has since received over 860 comments expressing anger. Yang is set to marry former EXID member Hani in September after a four-year relationship. The wedding was announced on May 31st, and Hani personally revealed the news in a handwritten letter on June 1st. However, the wedding has become a target of criticism as it was announced just four days after the patient’s death.
