MBC is peeling back the curtain on its new Friday-Saturday drama, Chief Detective 1958, revealing a main poster that’s bringing back old memories.
The poster features the four leading actors, Lee Je Hoon, Lee Dong Hwi, Choi Woo Sung, and Yoon Hyun Soo, striding confidently through the streets of Jongno, Seoul. They embody detectives in a period piece that meticulously recreates the 1950s and 60s, with hand-painted signs and trams racing down the streets. The slogan “An era of savagery, a human drama of true detectives” promises a heated team play among the passionate detectives.
Chief Detective 1958 is a prequel to the historic Korean investigation series Chief Detective (1971), set in 1958. It tells the riveting tale of Detective Park Young Han and his three comrades as they break down the irrational practices of corrupt power.
Lee Je Hoon takes on the role of a young Park Young Han, portraying a rural detective with grit and humanity, unwavering under pressure and equipped with keen insight. Lee Dong Hwi plays Kim Sang Soon, a “mad dog” detective from Jongnam Police Station, driven by sheer determination. But when the never-ending corruption finally gets to him, he meets Park Young Han.
Rising stars Choi Woo Sung and Yoon Hyun Soo are also gaining attention. Choi portrays Jo Kyung Hwan, a young man with exceptional strength, while Yoon plays Seo Ho Jeong, an elite with dreams of becoming a legendary detective.
The production team has hinted, “Lee Je Hoon, Lee Dong Hwi, Choi Woo Sung, and Yoon Hyun Soo form the perfect lineup for an investigation project, each bringing unique personality and skills to the table.” They’ve also encouraged audiences to look forward to their chemistry, promising a fresh take compared to the original quartet.
Under the direction of Kim Sung Hoon, known for Confidential Assignment, and penned by rookie writer Kim Young Shin with The Fiery Priest and Vincenzo writer Park Jae Bum as a creator, Chief Detective 1958 is set to premiere on the 19th at 9:50 PM KST.
