Diva, which is set to be released on Sept. 23, is a mystery thriller about the latent desire and madness waking up after the diving queen, Lee Young, got involved in a mysterious car accident. Shin Min Ah will show a whole new side of herself by taking on the role of Lee Young, who falls into chaos after losing her memory.

After the press screenings, Shin’s performances were followed by rave reviews.

“It’s a new kind of genre, so I wanted to show my new face, and I’m just glad that many people picked up on that. Also, I think the fact that Diva is quite different from my previous works made them think so even more.”

Shin challenged a thriller genre for the first time.

“In fact, I never really had a chance. During my teens and 20s, I was given bright and healthy images. When I received an offer for Diva, I wondered if it would suit me. Nevertheless, I was thrilled that an opportunity finally came and I really wanted to join the project.”

Was there any pressure in taking on the role of a diver?

“I enjoy swimming, so I have no fear of water. But diving was different. I have a fear of heights, but over the three-month course, I had to jump from higher elevations and work on my diving postures, so I guess I got used to it more. Rather than feeling burdened, there were a lot that I had to do for the movie, so it wasn’t easy.”

You took the lead role in a movie for the first time in 6 years since My Love, My Bride.

“I wanted to work on more projects, but I never really had a chance. In the meantime, I worked on two dramas, but I didn’t really find the right movie for me.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary of your debut.

“It kind of feels weird to say that I’m already in my 20th year. It’s also kind of fresh that time has flown by so quickly. I want to have more fun thinking about what I can do in the future than the last 20 years.”

Shin showed her love in her new movie as she stressed that Diva is a women-centric film.

“When I read the script, I was so glad. When I chose Diva, it was the time when there was a limit to the roles that the actresses could play. Of course, there are women-centric films now, but it was really nice to see a movie that revolves around women for the first time in my 20 years of career.”

She then also talked about the importance of women-centric films.

“At first, I was worried if the movie would even be released after getting investments. Because that’s the reality. And now that the movie is so close to the release date, I’m proud of myself. It’s really nice to see more and more female films in Hollywood and other countries. I’m even more thrilled that I got to be a part of this change.”
