Lisa is opening up about why she kept past relationships secret during BLACKPINK’s rise to global fame.
In her upcoming documentary Always LALISA, the singer says she worried that going public with a relationship could hurt the group’s popularity.
“In K-pop culture, you can’t date,” Lisa says in the film. “If you’re seeing someone and the paparazzi catch you, your popularity goes down. I dated a few times when I was younger, but when I was dating, I had to hide it. I didn’t want my relationship to be the reason BLACKPINK’s popularity dropped.”
Lisa also reveals that “Dream,” a track from her 2025 album Alter Ego, was inspired by someone she dated in secret.
Before releasing the song, she said she contacted the person again to ask for permission to put it out. According to Lisa, the ex agreed on one condition: that fans would not be able to figure out who the song was about.
“They thought they figured it out,” Lisa says in the documentary. “But I don’t think they did.”
Directed by Sue Kim and produced by Sony Music Vision in partnership with RCA Records and Tremolo Productions, Always LALISA will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11th before opening in theaters worldwide beginning October 12th.
Lisa has been the subject of dating speculation in recent years. She was repeatedly spotted with Frédéric Arnault, son of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault, beginning in 2023, though neither publicly confirmed a relationship. More recent reports have also linked her to Thai actor Blue Pongtiwat following alleged sightings in Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan.
