Coupang Play’s new series Newtopia has officially confirmed the casting of Park Jung Min and BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, along with the release of the first stills.
Newtopia tells the story of soldier Jae Yoon and his girlfriend Yeong Joo, who must navigate the zombie-infested streets of Seoul to reunite. The series stars Park Jung Min, known for his stellar performances in Deliver Us From Evil and Smugglers, as Soldier Lee Jae Yoon. Global star Jisoo, who gained attention in Snowdrop, will play Kang Yeong Joo, Jae Yoon’s girlfriend and a new employee with a background in engineering.
The storyline follows the couple as they desperately try to find each other amidst the chaos of a mysterious virus outbreak. The released stills highlight the contrasting situations of the characters: Jae Yoon (Park Jung Min) is shown with a panicked expression, encountering the zombie crisis while on military duty, while Yeong Joo (Jisoo) appears in a seemingly calm alley, adding intrigue to the plot.
The series is directed by visual storyteller Yoon Sung Hyun, known for his acclaimed debut Bleak Night and the stylish thriller Time to Hunt. Newtopia marks his first foray into series format, combining elements of apocalyptic horror and romance. Yoon Sung Hyun reunites with Park Jung Min for their third collaboration, following Bleak Night and Time to Hunt.
The script is penned by Han Jin Won, who won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Parasite, and The Killer’s Shopping Mall writer Ji Ho Jin. Together, they bring a fresh take on the genre, exploring the lives of young adults trying to navigate romance amidst a zombie apocalypse.
Meanwhile, Newtopia is set for release in 2025.
